Since I was a child, I have been drawn to libraries. Besides the books, an obvious perk, they offer stacks and niches in which to hide yourself away. In the past, they also had lots of furniture with clever compartments: card catalogues with index card-sized drawers and flat cabinets with thin, map-sized drawers. And, of course, carrels always provided an ideal hideaway.
Contemporary Library Carrels
For the contemporary library, however, the old, dark wood carrels just won’t do. Those staid pieces of furniture recall bygone days when unescorted women weren’t allowed in libraries. Today’s libraries need a sleek, modern touch such as the Antrim Carrel by Agati. With its floating work surface and knife-edge profile, Antrim brings the carrel into the new millennium.

As one of the fastest growing suburbs in the state, Maple Grove embarked on new library construction, almost tripling its size. AGATI provided its Hampton Seating series in a variety of areas, which also served to update the library’s aesthetic.
AGATI provided its curved Hampton booth with veneer screens and Antrim custom tables for the project. Space was maximized by custom designing Antrim tables to fit the Hampton’s exterior radius curve allowing patrons to use both sides of the booth. Dividing screens finished in an oak rift cut veneer provided additional privacy. The renovation now provides additional space for children and an area for teens designated as a “Teen Zone.” Meeting areas for small groups were added, as well as more computers. The new library boats a green roof, along with energy saving windows and lights.
Architecture and interiors, including furnishings was provided by Meyer Scherer & Rockcastle, Ltd. The core team from MS&R included Jeffrey Scherer, Dagmara Larsen, and Traci Lesneski.
